There was a bag with eleven Christmas themed blocks–ten that measured 12-1/2″ and one that measured 15-1/2″.

Hmmm…what do I do with that? They are beautifully constructed, just like Susan always made. Yes, this is another finish in honor of Susan Nixon.

I created some pinwheel blocks and some strips of 2-1/2″ squares. Also, added 1-1/2″ sashing around the 15″ block.

The blocks are joined with 2-1/2″ sashing. Then a triple border of 2-1/2″ background, a pieced border of 2-1/2″ squares and a final 2-1/2″ border.

It is a fun ...
read moreMy guild considers me the one to take all sorts of orphans blocks, donated fabric and scraps and "make something" from them. I love the challenges yet sometimes they are like squirrels running through my house.
One helpful book from the library gives me new ideas, so I ordered the book and now like working on all these odds even more. The book is called, "The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters: A Guide to Creating, Quilting & Living Courageously" by Sherri Lynn Wood. For me, worth every penny. I had it in a day because our city has a few Am ...
read moreOne project finished this weekend–quilted potholders for the music teacher at school.

These are 8″x9″, because that is the size the orphan blocks were when they came to me in a hand-me-down box. I make potholders with a layer of cotton batting, a layer of insulbright, and another layer of cotton batting. Nice and thick and no burnt hands. It is a good way to use up those too-big-to-throw-away-but-what-am-I-going-to-do-with-them scraps.
I hope she likes them.
read moreOh my --- I may have "wasted" some free time last week, and today will be a scramble to get all the stuff prepped for tomorrow morning!
Yesterday was super productive, but I can't share anything yet with you. It was a good day, though, and I learned a ton.
Let's chat about the UFO club. Despite the three-month hiatus since our last meeting, everyone stayed pretty productive, and lots and lots were accomplished. Few unhappy faces were handed out!
I want to share this photo of one of the attendees' quilts with you. It was made by Linda ...

Since I'm throwing this up on the blog for my own benefit, it's probably best to keep it brief.

Orphan Annie is a completed quilt top now! So nice to get another one finished up. Still hopeful there will time for another two or three to get knocked off the list before the end of the year.

| Orphan Annie all crumpled and cozy looking! |
Well, that month went by in a screaming hurry! I ended up spending most all of August with my daughter in Oklahoma. Waiting for her to have her baby and then helping out afterward. So thankful to have the time and opportunity to make it all work out.

So I got all the baby quilts done this week, labels and all! It felt really good to get these checked off the list.

The brown scrap bin yielded 150 slab blocks at 6.5" and looks like I will get three quilts from this pile of scraps. I've added bits from larger pieces and fat quarters, but the brown bin is now empty! How long that will last is anyone's guess.
This first top was designed around an orphan block that someone donated to our guild. Many donors are people who cannot quilt for health reasons, or from families who have lost their quilting mother or grandmother. The block is 18.5" so was perfect for my 6.5" blocks. I ...
read moreMy February OMG was to finish a table runner. I bought a couple boxes of fabric at an estate sale which contained some strip sets. I added the red vertical strips (from the box) and quilted it with the serpentine stitch on my machine. It’s a perfect fit for its new home.

I’m linking to Elm Street Quilts, where you can see all the other February OMG finishes.
read moreWelcome to February! I didn’t finish anything in January but made a lot of progress. That set me up for finishes in February.
I started The Short List many years ago to give myself goals to work toward and a way to focus. I continually change the categories as my goals and interests change.
Project 1 (stitching): The Tiny Modernist Holiday 2022 SAL. I finished the second release and went back to stitching part one.

Project 2 (charity): The pinwheel quilt. I’m turning the binding.

Project 3 (orphan): The table runner made from 30s reproduction fabrics. The top ...
read moreOn Monday I wrote about the burst of inspiration from the guild's charity project, wheelchair-sized lap quilts that are 36" x 48".
Here are the next two in the series. I'm using units from the parts department and orphan blocks so half the work is done. (Full disclosure: I've had to make a few extra blocks -- for example, I had nine Scrappy Trips blocks so made six more, and had nine Positivity blocks so made one more.)
Come back on Friday to see what else I've come up with!
Linking up with Wednesday Wait Loss Midweek ...
read moreTuesday noon: I was co-hostess for the Zion Woman's Club luncheon and used my vintage tablecloths on each table. In lieu of a white elephant gift exchange we each packaged "festive food." (I gave a gift box of Penzey's spices and received four different kinds of treats from Trader Joe's.) We collected hats and mittens for kids at Elmwood School in Zion.
Tuesday evening: my P.E.O. chapter had dinner at a great Italian restaurant. There was another festive food exchange. (I gave Penzey's, again, and got a ... read more
I certainly live in a vacuum. The book I'm reading - Looking for Jane? -- That's a REAL thing, although the book is fiction. This book is even more timely, based on events that are currently unfolding. No wonder there's a waiting list, and I need to finish it in five days, which I will.
So we had a wicked storm pass through on Saturday, and there was NO need for the weather app to know that we would get rain.
I was busy working inside and didn't really know anything was happening. I came out to play ...

read moreOrphanage in Blue top is finished. I've not cut any binding yet. I have made four more large blocks and will add sashing from my stash to make a lap quilt. The rest of the leftover scraps are being cut into squares and strips, likely enough for two baby quilts, all this from a small box of scraps. I'm feeling a bit like the little boy who gave Jesus five loaves and two fish to feed several thousand people!
The leftovers will soon be in plastic bags labeled by size and back in the blue scrap box. I ... read more- orphan blocks
